Jan-Erik Pettersson

WHO IS STIEG LARSSON? The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The Girl Who Played with Fire. The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest. In 2005, Lisbeth Salander exploded as a cultural icon, captivating fans around the world, first in the bestselling suspense novels and later in the film adaptations. But what of her creator? Stieg Larsson—the man behind the Millennium Trilogy phenomenon— died tragically of a heart attack on the eve of the first book’s publication, leaving a brilliant legacy soon shrouded in mystery and controversy. Now, fellow journalist and activist Kurdo Baksi—who worked closely with Larsson for a decade and appears as himself in Larsson’s fiction—presents a heart-piercing tribute to a close friend that is also a clearheaded analysis of a complex man. This memoir is a candid attempt to answer many questions about Larsson, including: his upbringing; the death threats from neo-Nazi groups that plagued both Larsson’s and Baksi’s daily lives; Larsson’s insomnia and prodigious capacity for work . . . and his stubborn dogmatism when he felt he was right, an uncompromising side that could—and often did—lead him into trouble. Baksi sheds light on some of the dark memories that fueled Larsson’s writing, offers powerful insight into his influences, and describes how elements of this brilliant but secretive man are reflected in his iconic characters. Already controversial, Baksi’s story is gathering praise and criticism from Larsson’s family, from fans, and from reviewers worldwide. This eloquent but troubling window into his life may raise as many questions as it answers, but it is a must-read for any fan of the Millennium Trilogy.

Jan-Erik Pettersson

Stieg Larsson's former publisher reveals the real man behind the mega-bestselling Millennium Trilogy--a man who fought heroically for human rights, and who brought that same political and moral passion to his writing. Until the trilogy's posthumous publication, Larsson was best known for his devotion to left-wing causes and as a tireless anti-fascist activist. Horrified by the rise of far-right extremism in Sweden, he dedicated himself to exposing these often shadowy and violent groups--at great personal risk--gaining international respect for the depth of his commitment and knowledge. Jan-Erik Pettersson shows how Stieg's energetic championing of social justice and women's rights characterized his life as well as his work, finally animating the Millennium Trilogy and particularly the character of the unforgettable Lisbeth Salander. Throughout the book Pettersson explores the issues, people, and places who inspired Larsson's portrayal of Salander and her champion, journalist Michael Blomkvist.

With its powerful images of rape and revenge, Stieg Larsson's bestselling Millennium trilogy has made a major impact on the contemporary crime novel. This collection explores the role that rape plays in contemporary crime fiction, examining the sexually violent images at the heart of the Millennium trilogy in its many guises – from novels, to Swedish film adaptations, to Hollywood blockbuster. At the centre of discussion is Larsson's female heroine, Lisbeth Salander, one of popular culture's most unforgettable characters. The collection evaluates her status as a twenty-first century heroine, arguing that what makes Salander so interesting and culturally relevant, is her blend of vulnerability and violence.Putting Larsson's work into dialogue with a range of contemporary Scandinavian and Anglophone crime novelists, including Jo Nesbø, Håkan Nesser, Mo Hayder and Val McDermid, these essays offer cross-cultural insights into how notions of sexual violence, victims and vengeance are constructed. Opening up a range of vital new questions, the book interrogates the very terms by which we understand and encounter violent images in popular fiction and film.

She lives on the Gulf Coast of Florida. She has three sons, and a Brittany named Jubal. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Steig Larsson gave Lasse Winkler, editor in chief of the Swedish book trade magazine Svensk Bokhandel, one of the last if not the last interviews of his life. Winkler remembered Larsson in this article in The Telegraph. The interview was conducted before the Millennium trilogy went global. In the interview, Larsson anticipated what the success of his fiction-writing would mean to him personally and professionally, and discussed the genesis of the series, including The Girl Who Played With Fire (TGWPWF). Larsson told Winkler that the seed of the character of Lisbeth Salander was Pippi Longstocking. From the website Pippi's World.com: She can do very bizarre things on account of her strength, such as lifting her horse from one place to another and throwing people across a room! In one place it is said that Pippi Longstocking has the strength of ten full-grown men. Larsson asked himself What would she be like today? What would she be like as an adult? What would you call a person like that? A sociopath? Hyperactive? Wrong. She simply sees society in a different light. Ill make her 25 years-old, and an outcast. She has no friends and is deficient in social skills. That was my original thought. Larsson told Winkler that he also used another character of Pippi Longstockings creator, Astrid Lindgrenthe boy detective, Kalle Blomkvistas the inspiration for Mikael Blomkvist. Only now hes 45 years-old... . An altruistic know-it-all... ., according to Larsson. Larsson explained to Winkler that he learned the mechanics of crime fiction from the books he reviewed when he worked at Swedish TT news agency. Larsson cites the authors whose work he critiquedSara Paretsky, Val McDermid, Elizabeth George and Minette Walters as influences. Buy a copy to keep reading! Kurdo Baksi

Five years after his death, Stieg Larsson is best known as the author of the Millennium Trilogy, but during his career as a journalist he was a crucial protagonist in the battle against racism and for democracy in Sweden, and one of the founders of the anti-facist magazine Expo. Kurdo Baksi first met Larsson in 1992; it was the beginning of an intense friendship, and a fruitful but challenging working relationship. In this candid and rounded memoir, Baksi answers the questions a multitude of Larsson's fans have already asked, about his upbringing; the recurring death threats; his insomnia and his vices; his feminism - so evident in his books - and his dogmatism. What was he like as a colleague? Who provided the inspiration for his now-immortal characters (Baksi is one of the few who appears in the trilogy as himself)? Who was Lisbeth Salander?

Eva Gabrielsson

Here is the real inside story—not the one about the Stieg Larsson phenomenon, but rather the love story of a man and a woman whose lives came to be guided by politics and love, coffee and activism, writing and friendship. Only one person in the world knows that story well enough to tell it with authority. Her name is Eva Gabrielsson. Eva Gabrielsson and Stieg Larsson shared everything, starting when they were both eighteen until his untimely death thirty-two years later at the age of fifty. In “There Are Things I Want You to Know” about Stieg Larsson and Me, Eva Gabrielsson accepts the daunting challenge of telling the story of their shared life steeped in love and sharpened in the struggle for justice and human rights. She chooses to tell it in short, spare, lyrical chapters, like snapshots, regaling Larsson’s readers with the inside account of how he wrote, why he wrote, who the sources were for Lisbeth and his other characters—graciously answering Stieg Larsson’s readers’ most pressing questions—and at the same time telling us the things we didn’t know we wanted to know—about love and loss, death, betrayal, and the mistreatment of women.

Kurdo Baksi
