In Ethereal Queer, Amy Villarejo offers a historically engaged, theoretically sophisticated, and often personal account of how TV representations of queer life have changed as the medium has evolved since the 1950s. Challenging the widespread view that LGBT characters did not make a sustained appearance on television until the 1980s, she draws on innovative readings of TV shows and network archives to reveal queer television’s lengthy, rich, and varied history. Villarejo goes beyond concerns about representational accuracy. She tracks how changing depictions of queer life, in programs from Our Miss Brooks to The L Word, relate to transformations in business models and technologies, including modes of delivery and reception such as cable, digital video recording, and online streaming. In so doing, she provides a bold new way to understand the history of television.

Business is lousy, and Charley Wolf, P.I., is about to close up shop. But on his final day in his office, a high voltage beauty named Ethereal Lust walks in the door, seizes his heart and plops a fat wad of cash in his hand. Ever the shrewd detective, Charley quickly finds out that Ethereal is ‘not your normal girl from Chicago.’ Ethereal’s father is an exiled Tibetan Lama, master illusionist and member of a secret Tantric sect. Her mum is a star acrobat, trapeze-artist and mud-wrestler in an erotic circus.Ethereal has a wild blend of both in her own makeup. When Ethereal tells him what she’s hiring him to do, well, the street-hardened gumshoe in him is skeptical to say the least. She wants Charley to find an ancient relic that may be older than the earth itself: The Crystal Phallus. Millennia old, the Crystal Phallus is reputed to hold the secrets to the origins of life on earth. Ethereal says it can bestow a level of sexual ecstasy normally accessible only to the gods. And as Charley Wolf pursues this highly demented case, he will discover that the Phallus can also open doorways to other dimensions of reality, has the power to bestow Eternal Youth, and is believed to be an anatomical part of a god that blew to pieces in the Big Bang of Creation. Charley has lots of competition: a 24 centuries-old mummy, a rather annoying Fat Man working for the CIA, warrioresses from an undiscovered civilization hidden deep in the Amazon jungle, a drag queen reporter for one of those goofball newspapers specializing in 7-headed dogs and lost civilizations perched underneath the Bronx in New York, neo-Nazis, a Peter Lorre-like dwarf that deals in erotic antiques, a Heavy Metal rock star named Fagus Magus who is planning a live video shoot wherein he will perform magical rituals on the Phallus as part of the video , a bizarre Rastafarian man that roams time and space in a seemingly impossible manner, and an extra-terrestrial, 6’2” horned toad that just might be the very Devil himself. Charley is so smitten with Ethereal that he dives blindly into the case, hoping to find the Crystal Phallus and thereby win Ethereal’s love. But there is a price Charley has to pay as he joins the hunt for what a Nobel prize-winning archaeologist calls “the greatest find of all time”:His sanity.Sharp as a razor’s edge, the gorgeous and electric Ethereal Lust is right there with Charley at every step in the case, and often three steps ahead of him. Ethereal is so savvy and knows so much about things Charley can’t even believe are real that he begins to wonder just what she is. But it doesn’t matter -- he’s got to have her no matter what she is, and will do anything to win her love. He’ll even go to Hell for her.

The Ethereal Aether is a historical narrative of one of the great experiments in modern physical science. The fame of the 1887 Michelson-Morley aether-drift test on the relative motion of the earth and the luminiferous aether derives largely from the role it is popularly supposed to have played in the origins, and later in the justification, of Albert Einstein’s first theory of relativity; its importance is its own. As a case history of the intermittent performance of an experiment in physical optics from 1880 to 1930 and of the men whose work it was, this study describes chronologically the conception, experimental design, first trials, repetitions, influence on physical theory, and eventual climax of the optical experiment. Michelson, Morley, and their colleague Miller were the prime actors in this half-century drama of confrontation between experimental and theoretical physics. The issue concerned the relative motion of “Spaceship Earth” and the Universe, as measured against the background of a luminiferous medium supposedly filling all interstellar space. At stake, it seemed, were the phenomena of astronomical aberration, the wave theory of light, and the Newtonian concepts of absolute space and time. James Clerk Maxwell’s suggestion for a test of his electromagnetic theory was translated by Michelson into an experimental design in 1881, redesigned and reaffirmed as a null result with Morley in 1887, thereafter modified and partially repeated by Morley and Miller, finally completed in 1926 by Miller alone, then by Michelson’s team again in the late 1920s. Meanwhile Helmholtz, Kelvin, Rayleigh, FitzGerald, Lodge, Larmor, Lorentz, and Poincaré—most of the great names in theoretical physics at the turn of the twentieth century—had wrestled with the anomaly presented by Michelson’s experiment. As the relativity and quantum theories matured, wave-particle duality was accepted by a new generation of physicists. The aether-drift tests disproved the old and verified the new theories of light and electromagnetism. By 1930 they seemed to explain Einstein, relativity, and space-time. But in historical fact, the aether died only with its believers.

Just exactly where do we find the supernatural in the contemporary world? It’s both pervasive—everywhere—and specific—a particular somewhere. Otherworldly traditions and stories still spread through oral narration. They pervade mass media and the digital world and often form the stuff of hypermodern folklorethe stew of folk, popular, consumer, and digital culture that constitutes much of contemporary life. People also imbue specific places—from the local haunted house or cemetery to whole towns or cities—with supernatural manifestations or significance. Putting the Supernatural in Its Place explores zombies, vampires, witches, demented nuns, mediums, and ghosts in their natural (and unnatural) habitats while making sense of the current ubiquity of the supernatural on the Internet, in the movies, in tourism, and in places like New Orleans. This unique study of how we locate the supernatural sheds light on why certain sites and their stories captivate us and shows how pondering the supernatural can bring a better understanding of the places we create and inhabit. Each chapter is authored by a noted folklorist who examines the supernatural as it appears “in place.” Among the locales are Salem, Massachusetts; Lily Dale, New York; and Internet fan sites for the Twilight movies and the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Supernatural places have the potential to alter perceptions of reality—sometimes enchanting, sometimes terrifying, and sometimes even schooling those who experience them. Ultimately, the authors demonstrate that, culturally speaking, the supernatural’s place is important and not trivial.
