True religion confronts earth with heaven and brings eternity to bear upon time. The messenger of Christ, though he speaks from God, must also, as the Quakers used to say, "speak to the condition" of his hearers; otherwise he will speak a language known only to himself. His message must be not only timeless but timely. He must speak to his own generation. The message of this book does not grow out of these times but it is appropriate to them. It is called forth by a condition which has existed in the Church for some years and is steadily growing worse. I refer to the loss of the concept of majesty from the popular religious mind. The Church has surrendered her once lofty concept of God and has substituted for it one so low, so ignoble, as to be utterly unworthy of thinking, worshipping men. This she has done not deliberately, but little by little and without her knowledge; and her very unawareness only makes her situation all the more tragic.

"True religion confronts earth with heaven and brings eternity to bear upon time," says the author in his preface." The messenger of Christ, though he speaks from God, must also, as the Quakers used to say 'speak to the condition' of his hearers; otherwise he will speak a language known only to himself. His message must be not only timeless but timely. He must speak to his own generation. "The message of this book is indeed both timeless and timely. Tozer is primarily concerned with the loss of the concept of 'majesty' from the popular mind and more importantly in the thinking of the church. He sees the church as having surrendered her once lofty concept of God - not deliberately, but little by little and without her knowledge. With this comes a further loss of religious awe and a sense of the divine presence, of an appropriate spirit of worship and of our ability to withdraw inwardly to meet God in adoring silence." Tozer attempts to address this problem, to go back to the causes of the decline and to understand and correct the errors that have given rise to our loss of a sense of the holy. "It is impossible to keep our moral practices sound and our inward attitudes right while our idea of God is erroneous or inadequate" he tells us.

Excerpt from An Introduction to the Critical Study and Knowledge of the Holy Scriptures, Vol. 4 The second portion of this volume consists of Introductions to the respective books of the New Testament. And here I am not author, but simply editor. Here I felt that I stood on very different ground from that which I had occupied with regard to the Textual portion of the volume. I had not so much to consider how I should have treated the subjects, as what addition might be needful, in consequence of modern research, to what the Rev. T. H. Home had him self stated. It was not for me to pull down one edifice in order to erect another in its stead; to do this for the mere sake of change, would be like removing an old manor house to make room for a trim Italian villa. A painstaking compiler of catalogues and indexes, the biblical scholar and bibliographer Thomas Hartwell Horne (1780–1862) first published his most famous work in 1818, having begun his research for it many years earlier in 1801. Reissued here in five parts is the expanded four-volume tenth edition of 1856, which includes revisions by the scholars Samuel Davidson (c.1806–98) and Samuel Prideaux Tregelles (1813–75). This monumental and influential work of nineteenth-century biblical scholarship remains a valuable resource for modern researchers, reflecting the methods and perspectives of its era. Volume 1 addresses the authenticity and authority of the Old and New Testaments. Volume 2, the work of Davidson, addresses the Old Testament and has been split into two parts for this reissue. Volume 3 contains a summary of biblical geography and antiquities. Volume 4, rewritten by Tregelles for this edition, addresses textual criticism of the New Testament.

Excerpt from An Introduction to the Critical Study and Knowledge of the Holy Scriptures, Vol. 4 III. Besides the Pentateuch, the Jews ascribe to Moses eleven psalms, from psalm xc. To xcix. Inclusive. There is however no solid evidence to prove that these psalms were composed by him for the title of the ninetieth psalm a prayer of Moses the Man of which, they pretend, must be applied also to the ten following psalms, is not sufficient. The greater part of the titles of the psalms is not original, nor indeed very antient: and some of them are evidently misplaced: we find also in these psalms the names of persons, and other marks, which by no means agree with Moses.
