In 1956, when Pope Pius XII signed the declaration raising the church of Our Lady of Sorrows to the status of a minor basilica, he remarked to Fr. Roschini, OSM, the Servite Procurator General in Rome, “I want to honor the city of Chicago and Servants of Mary who have done so much to spread devotion to the Sorrowful Virgin.” From the 1874 founding of the parish on the outskirts of Chicago, to its elevation as a basilica and into the present day, Our Lady of Sorrows continues to honor the city and be a blessing to the Servites who established and continue to maintain it. In these pages, through word and picture, we tell the story of this magnificent building. Step by step, we present to you the extraordinary works of art in marble and plaster, wood and glass, paint and tile, which make up “Sorrows.” As you take this visual tour, we ask you to please keep in mind also its unseen treasure: the people and ministries which have turned this structure of plaster and stone into a living, vibrant church for many generations. Our Lady of Sorrows was not the first Servite foundation in the United States, nor will it be the last. It has become however, a symbol of the Servite presence in the city and our spiritual center. Although the costs to maintain such a building are burdensome, with the help of many whose lives have been touched by her in some way, we remain committed to preserving Sorrows for future generations. Please enjoy this glimpse into the majestic splendor of the basilica. We hope that you are able to one day make a visit (or revisit) in person to experience the joy that is Our Lady of Sorrows. In your dwelling place, O Lord of life, our eyes are filled with your beauty, our hearts are opened to your wisdom, and our minds are illumined with your goodness. (Servite Liturgy of the Hours) Friar Servants of Mary
