It is well established that the sliding mode control strategy provides an effective and robust method of controlling the deterministic system due to its well-known invariance property to a class of bounded disturbance and parameter variations. Advances in microcomputer technologies have made digital control increasingly popular among the researchers worldwide. And that led to the study of discrete-time sliding mode control design and its implementation. This brief presents, a method for multi-rate frequency shaped sliding mode controller design based on switching and non-switching type of reaching law. In this approach, the frequency dependent compensator dynamics are introduced through a frequency-shaped sliding surface by assigning frequency dependent weighing matrices in a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) design procedure. In this way, the undesired high frequency dynamics or certain frequency disturbance can be eliminated. The states are implicitly obtained by measuring the output at a faster rate than the control. It is also known that the vibration control of smart structure is a challenging problem as it has several vibratory modes. So, the frequency shaping approach is used to suppress the frequency dynamics excited during sliding mode in smart structure. The frequency content of the optimal sliding mode is shaped by using a frequency dependent compensator, such that a higher gain can be obtained at the resonance frequencies. The brief discusses the design methods of the controllers based on the proposed approach for the vibration suppression of the intelligent structure. The brief also presents a design of discrete-time reduced order observer using the duality to discrete-time sliding surface design. First, the duality between the coefficients of the discrete-time reduced order observer and the sliding surface design is established and then, the design method for the observer using Riccati equation is explained. Using the proposed method, the observer for the Power System Stabilizer (PSS) for Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) system is designed and the simulation is carried out using the observed states. The discrete-time sliding mode controller based on the proposed reduced order observer design method is also obtained for a laboratory experimental servo system and verified with the experimental results.

Particle Accelerator Physics covers the dynamics of relativistic particle beams, basics of particle guidance and focusing, lattice design, characteristics of beam transport systems and circular accelerators. Particle-beam optics is treated in the linear approximation including sextupoles to correct for chromatic aberrations. Perturbations to linear beam dynamics are analyzed in detail and correction measures are discussed, while basic lattice design features and building blocks leading to the design of more complicated beam transport systems and circular accelerators are studied. Characteristics of synchrotron radiation and quantum effects due to the statistical emission of photons on particle trajectories are derived and applied to determine particle-beam parameters. Due to the increasing security and reliability demand of actual industrial process control systems, the study on fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control of dynamic systems has received considerable attention. Fault accommodation (FA) is one of effective methods that can be used to enhance system stability and reliability, so it has been widely and in-depth investigated and become a hot topic in recent years. Fault detection is used to monitor whether a fault occurs, which is the first step in FA. On the basis of fault detection, fault estimation (FE) is utilized to determine online the magnitude of the fault, which is a very important step because the additional controller is designed using the fault estimate. Compared with fault detection, the design difficulties of FE would increase a lot, so research on FE and accommodation is very challenging. Although there have been advancements reported on FE and accommodation for dynamic systems, the common methods at the present stage have design difficulties, which limit applications of respective design approaches. Therefore, the problems of FE and accommodation are needed to be further studied. This book considers the theory and technology of FE and accommodation for dynamic systems, and establishes a systemic and comprehensive framework of FE and accommodation for continuous/discrete-time systems.
My aim, in writing this monograph, has been to remedy this omission by presenting a comprehensive and unified theory of observers for continuous-time and discrete -time linear systems. Since 1900, the average life expectancy in the developed world has almost doubled, from 45 to 80. “We are almost a new species,” declared the English writer V.S. The concept of observability of entities in physical science is typically analyzed in terms of the nature and significance of a dichotomy between observables and unobservables. In this book, however, this categorization is resisted and observability is analyzed in a descriptive way in terms of the information which one can receive through interaction with objects in the world. The account of interaction and the transfer of information is done using applicable scientific theories. In this way the question of observability of scientific entities is put to science itself. Several examples are presented which show how this interaction-information account of observability is done. It is demonstrated that observability has many dimensions which are in general orthogonal. The epistemic significance of these dimensions is explained. This study is intended primarily as a method for understanding problems of observability rather than as a solution to those problems. The important issue of scientific realism and its relation to observability, however, demands attention. Hence, the implication of the interaction-information account for realism is drawn in terms of the epistemic significance of the dimensions of observability. This amounts to specifying what it is about good observations that make them objective evidence for scientific theories.

R.H. Wessel was the owner, editor, and publisher of the Frederick Enterprise / Frederick Press, and a leading citizen from the day he first came to Frederick, Oklahoma, in 1902 until his death in 1956. He is best known for his column "The Observer," for which this book is titled. He left behind a considerable legacy of his adventurous life through letters, photographs, documents, and historic files. His experiences in Lawton during the 1901 Land Lottery and the following homestead years in Frederick are covered in this book. As a newspaperman, with a love for telling a story, his letters are an incredible documentation of life on the Oklahoma frontier, as well as his love story by mail with Margaret Scow, the bride he brought to Oklahoma after "proving up" on his homestead and obtaining his own newspaper.
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - Political Systems - General and Comparisons, grade: 1,3, University of Mannheim (School of Social Sciences), language: English, abstract: Domestic election observers sometimes endorse elections even though those cannot be characterized as free and fair. Based on the studies of Judith Kelley (2009: 2010), I examine what causes this endorsement. My argument is that domestic observers are more likely to endorse unfree elections if pre-election violence and improvement took place. The dataset used to answer the research question is a new one, based on domestic observer reports from the GNDEM, Freedom House, the PTS and the V-dem 6.0 dataset. By doing logistic regression, I find out that some reasons for endorsement are similar for both domestic and international observers. It is puzzling that domestic monitors accept fraudulent elections because it affects their credibility and reduces their influence as they may be viewed as unreliable. For international observers, various reasons for this phenomenon have been identified but domestic observers have received little attention so far. Yet, domestic organizations are different from international ones in terms of structure and environment, which raises the question to what extent reasons for endorsement can be similar. Therefore, it is necessary to take a deeper look at local observers in order to fill a gap in the literature. Moreover, a better understanding is needed in order to improve domestic monitoring, the quality of democracy promotion, and to avoid the unwanted effect of stabilizing non-democratic regimes. Democratization must come from the inside in order to be successful and domestic observers may give the crucial incentive; however, only credible monitors can make a difference. Therefore, my research question will be the following: why would domestic election observers endorse unfree elections?

The high reliability required in industrial processes has created the necessity of detecting abnormal conditions, called faults, while processes are operating. The term fault generically refers to any type of process degradation, or degradation in equipment performance because of changes in the process's physical characteristics, process inputs or environmental conditions. This book is about the fundamentals of fault detection and diagnosis in a variety of nonlinear systems which are represented by ordinary differential equations. The fault detection problem is approached from a differential algebraic viewpoint, using residual generators based upon high-gain nonlinear auxiliary systems (‘observers’). A prominent role is played by the type of mathematical tools that will be used, requiring knowledge of differential algebra and differential equations. Specific theorems tailored to the needs of the problem-solving procedures are developed and proved. Applications to real-world problems, both with constant and time-varying faults, are made throughout the book and include electromechanical positioning systems, the Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR), bioreactor models and belt drive systems, to name but a few.
