It was our home away from home. It was a gathering point, a place to go when there was nowhere else to go. If you wanted to find a friend, the first place to look was The Shack What is "normal"? And how does the past affect the present? In his early teen years, Tommy Carter's family falls apart. He finds something with his friends that he can't find with his family; he discovers that peace of mind is found at the bottom of a bottle, even if only temporarily. Everyone drinks at the age of fourteen, right? It's the late 1960s, and the world appears to be coming apart at the seams. Politicians continue to be assassinated, and the United States becomes embroiled in yet another war. The lives of four boys in a small Midwestern town mimic the turbulent times as their worlds crumble around them. Tommy and his friends (Jake, Mitch, and Ralphie) find that to survive, they must rely on each other-and alcohol. The Shack is a first-person account of families destroyed and youth interrupted-of troubled times when a family history of alcoholism can affect lives in ways that are understood only many years later. It's a story of dysfunction, friendship, addiction, redemption, and eventual forgiveness.

In this booklet I hope to guide you through The Shack. We will look at the book with a charitable but critical eye, attempting to understand what it teaches and how it can be that opinions about the book vary so widely. We do this not simply to be critical, but as an exercise in discernment and critical thinking. We will simply look at what the author teaches and compare that to the Bible.

Two worlds collide when Caroline Connaught (Carrie) and Charlie Jones meet by a bench in a pub garden. Not much is known about Charlie’s background. Carrie is orphaned during World War II and raised by an aunt, going on to win a place at Oxford University. Having graduated during the post-war gloom with not too many job prospects, we join Carrie and Charlie as they embark on a life together on the East Coast, which gives them three children and an adopted shack facing the North Sea. Charlie converts the shack into something resembling a holiday home. Carrie home tutors all three of her children and works as a curator in the local Maritime Museum. Theo, her eldest son, is quite brilliant; Phoebe is our drama queen; and Jack is the youngest and doesn’t really have the drive and ambition of his siblings. Their lives are a mishmash of fun and laughter coupled with hard work and dedication. They were never going to set the world on fire, but they would have a jolly good try.

In The Shack, contemporary Irish poets reflect on their time in the foothills and mountains that straddle North Carolina and Virginia. The volume is a conversation in poetry and prose across a wide array of circumstances and decades that was generated by Dillon Johnston's bold venture in launching an Irish poetry press at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Founded in 1975, WFU Press remains the major publisher of Irish poetry in North America. For nearly forty years it has acted, in Johnston's words, as "a mediator between the American reader's consciousnesses, the world we inhabit, and an other world that we otherwise could not." During the burgeoning years of the Press, Johnston, with his wife and co-publisher Guinn Batten, brought many Irish poets to Wake Forest University and to their own mountain hideaway in nearby Virginia, which was nicknamed "the shack." The Shack is therefore dedicated to Johnston and Batten in celebration of the connection they created between this region and Ireland. The complex relationship between the Appalachians and Ireland has long been noted, but seldom as personally and artistically as in this book. Beginning with a reverie in the foothills, moving through meditations on nature and culture and on the old world meeting the new, and ending with a hand spinning a globe in Carolina, these poems and reflections bring with them a transatlantic consciousness that has increasingly come to define our lives. Not only did Wake Forest University Press bring the globe to Carolina, but also, in its way, introduced Wake Forest University to the world.

Here’s just a taste of what you’ll see in this useful summary: “Mackenzie Allen Phillips, who is known to his close friends and family as “Mack”, is not a typical man, nor has he had typical experiences. Mack’s story begins on a cold day, with snow and ice decorating the world outside. As he walks down his driveway toward the mailbox, he notices the treacherous ice already making the driveway slick. In the mailbox sits only one envelope with his name written across the front. There’s no stamp or address, just Mack’s name. Curiously, Mack tears open the envelope and reads a short note asking him to meet someone at the shack. The note is signed “Papa”. Slightly flustered and caught off guard, Mack tries to forget the note and heads back up the driveway, but he slips and falls to his back, hitting his head against the ice. Pulling himself up, Mack makes it back safely inside his house, calls his wife to tell her to stay put, and does his best to patch himself up, trying to forget the strange note sitting in his home office. The note only brings up The Great Sadness.” Read the rest by downloading and reading it now! Available even if it’s 3 AM! Roger E. Olson

The Shack has touched millions of readers with its portrayal of a compassionate God in the face of great evil. Many have identified with the main character's Great Sadness, the terrible burden of grief that often accompanies and follows a deep loss, for the Great Sadness is part of the human condition. And it compels us to ask, Where is God? Who is God? Roger Olson, who has faced his own Great Sadness, finds a good deal of comfort in this much beloved, story as have so many others. Some may ask, however, Is God really like that? Is that really how God responds to evil? Can God be trusted? Olson also views The Shack with a theologian's eye and finds much sound truth. He delves into many of the significant issues raised by the book such as forgiving those who have done us great evil, how God acts in the world, how God is three persons in one and what difference this makes to us. While he offers his own criticisms of the book, he largely finds the truth about God in The Shack.

Randal Rauser

What would it be like to lose your youngest child to a serial killer? And then to have God invite you out for a conversation at the very shack where the terrible deed took place? And then imagine that the door to that shack of horrors opened . . . and before you knew it you had been swept up in the motherly embrace of a large African American woman? This most unlikely of stories, as told in William Young's The Shack, has become a runaway bestseller and it is easy to see why. But even as lives have been transformed through this book, other readers have sternly denounced it as a hodgepodge of serious theological error, even heresy. With one pastor urging his congregation to read it and another forbidding his congregation to, many Christians have simply been left confused. Aware both of the excitement and uncertainty generated by The Shack, theologian Randal Rauser takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the pages of the story. In successive chapters he explores many of the book's complex and controversial issues. Thus he explains why God the Father is revealed as an African American woman, he defends the book's theology of the Trinity against charges of heresy and he considers its provocative denial of a Trinitarian hierarchy. But at its heart The Shack is a response to evil and so Rauser spends the final three chapters considering the book's explanation for why God allows evil, how the atoning work of Christ offers new hope for a suffering world and ultimately how this hope extends to all of creation. Through these chapters Rauser offers an honest and illuminating discussion which opens up a new depth to the conversation while providing the reader with new opportunities for Finding God in The Shack.

Quicklets: Learn more. Read less. The Shack is a powerful story of the transformation of a bitter, grieving father into a man of God with a heart full of love and forgiveness. Told by Willie, the loyal, though skeptical, best friend of Mackenzie Allen Phillips, The Shack begins in the midst of Mack's "Great Sadness", which descended on him following the abduction and apparent murder of his six-year-old daughter Missy. Ravaged by grief and guilt, he lives with a darkness that threatens to consume him and his relationship with his wife Nan and their other five children. Then, on an icy winter day, Mack receives a strange invitation to "Meet me at the shack this weekend. Love, Papa." Trembling with both fear and anticipation, Mack goes back to the hated scene of his personal hell where, instead of his abusive father, he encounters God in the strangest forms he could have imagined. An international best-seller; The Shack has sold over 14 million copies; has been translated into Spanish, German, and Croatian; and can be found in paperback, hardback, CD, Kindle, and Audible Audio.
