NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER, NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE “Gruesome yet poetic…highly original.” —The Seattle Times “Dark and funny.” —Wired “A mesmerizing evolution of a classic contemporary myth.” —Simon Pegg “A strange and unexpected treat…elegantly written, touching, and fun.” —Audrey Niffenegger, author of The Time Traveler’s Wife “Has there been a more sympathetic monster since Frankenstein’s?” —Financial Times “R” is having a no-life crisis—he is a zombie. He has no memories, no identity, and no pulse, but he is a little different from his fellow Dead. He may occasionally eat people, but he’d rather be riding abandoned airport escalators, listening to Sinatra in the cozy 747 he calls home, or collecting souvenirs from the ruins of civilization. And then he meets a girl. First as his captive, then his reluctant house guest, Julie is a blast of living color in R’s gray landscape, and something inside him begins to bloom. He doesn’t want to eat this girl—although she looks delicious—he wants to protect her. But their unlikely bond will cause ripples they can’t imagine, and their hopeless world won’t change without a fight. Isaac Marion’s genre-defying debut startled the literary world with its poignant subversion of the zombie mythos, inspiring a major film adaptation and being translated into twenty-seven languages. Read the groundbreaking first entry as the Warm Bodies series approaches its conclusion with The Living, coming in 2017.

R is a young man with an existential crisis--he is a zombie. He shuffles through an America destroyed by war, social collapse, and the mindless hunger of his undead comrades, but he craves something more than blood and brains. He can speak just a few grunted syllables, but his inner life is deep, full of wonder and longing. He has no memories, noidentity, and no pulse, but he has dreams. After experiencing a teenage boy's memories while consuming his brain, R makes an unexpected choice that begins a tense, awkward, and stragely sweet relationship with the victim's human girlfriend. Julie is a blast of color in the otherwise dreary and gray landscape that surrounds R. His decision to protect her will transform not only R, but his fellow Dead, and perhaps their whole lifeless world. Scary, funny, and surprisingly poignant, Warm Bodies is about being alive, being dead, and the blurry line in between. Review “Elegantly written, touching, and fun.” (Audrey Niffenegger, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Time Traveler's Wife ) “Dark and funny.” (Wired ) “Warm Bodies is a terrific zombook. Whether you're warm-bodied or cold-bodied, snuggle up to it with the lights low and enjoy a dead-lightful combination of horror and romance.” (Examiner.com ) About the Author Isaac Marion was born near Seattle in 1981 and has lived in and around that city ever since. Summary (from the book jacket) 'R' is a zombie. He has no name, no memories, and no pulse, but he has dreams. He is a little different from his fellow Dead. Amongst the ruins of an abandoned city, R meets a girl. Her name is Julie and she is the opposite of everything he knows - warm and bright and very much alive, she is a blast of colour in a dreary grey landscape. For reasons he can't understand, R chooses to save Julie instead of eating her, and a tense yet strangely tender relationship begins. This has never happened before. It breaks the rules and defies logic, but R is no longer content with life in the grave. He wants to breathe again, he wants to live, and Julie wants to help him. But their grim, rotting world won't be changed without a fight... The Review This book’s beautifully subtle cover made me pick it up, the description and the enthusiastic cover quotes from bestselling authors made me crack open the covers but a well conceived marketing strategy will only take a book so far. Reading the first page convinced me that I just had to know more about “R”. Book purchase swiftly followed. Warm Bodies is Isaac Marion’s debut novel. It is a story of a post-everything world where the surviving stragglers of living humans share what’s left of the planet with the hungry dead. This is a zombie novel (there are no vampires and certainly no other kinds of supernatural beings in this world – just a grim rotting reality) yet it is far from the normal end-of-the-world shoot ’em up that is the usual zombie movie or book treatment. For starters the narrator and protagonist of the story, R, is a flesh eating zombie but actually he’s quite a likeable fellow – honestly, it’s hard to hold the killing and brain eating against him. While he is outwardly limited to monosyllabic speech and groaning, inside his mind there is wit and poetry. He strives to be more than just a flesh obsessed monster and the event that acts as catalyst for this change is his falling in love with Julie, a Living girl. Once Julie and R’s living and dead worlds have collided readers are left with an unlikely forbidden love storyline set against a typical backdrop of issues and factions that would keep them apart. Warm Bodies doesn’t read like a romance novel, this isn’t Twilight with zombies, Julie and R don’t share an intense passion – it’s rather more like a sweet and hesitant friendship that blossoms into a deeper feeling. While their relationship is the reason for the story it isn’t solely what the story is about. There are the actions and feelings of the living characters, some of whom just wish for death. There are the different zombie factions, those who are evolving and those who want to keep the world a dead place. There are plenty of potential allegories in this story and how a reader approaches the novel will probably effect what message they take away from the book. Warm Bodies is an ambitious work. It reads like it was aiming for classic sci-fi /fantasy territory where the original and literary meld to make memorable classic genre novels but with so many different ways to read the story it’s hard to know whether this was intentional or not. Only time will tell whether this book achieves classic status but it’s certainly an impressive first novel however you approach the story. Written with stunning originality and constructed with thought provoking prose, Warm Bodies is a highly readable, if most unusual, zombie novel.

The Guardian called Warm Bodies 'the zombie novel with a heart'; Audrey Niffenegger said 'Warm Bodies is an unexpected treat', and Stephenie Meyer eagerly looked forward to the next book. Julie Grigio drives with her parents through the crumbling wastelands of America – a nightmarish family road trip in search of a new home. A few hundred miles away, Nora Greene finds herself the reluctant, terrified guardian of her younger brother when her parents abandon them in the not-quite-empty ruins of Seattle. In the darkness of a forest, a dead man in a red tie opens his eyes. But there are some answers R doesn't want to find. A past life, an old shadow, crawling up from the basement. Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 3,0, University of Würzburg (Universität), course: Semantics, language: English, abstract: This paper is going to deal with the usage and effects of ‘presupposition’ and ‘entailment’ with regard to the emergence of these semantic theories in Isaac Marion’s novel Warm Bodies. For this purpose, the following will be subdivided into two main parts. The first one will be an introductory part in which every tool and term that is to be used will be spelled out. The first chapter is going to deal with ‘truth values’ and ‘truth conditions’. The terms ‘truth condition’ and ‘truth value’, as well as the meaning of ‘priori’ and ‘posteriori’ truth are going to be pointed out in order to show the relations of the theory of ‘truth’ with the ones of ‘entailment’ and ‘presupposition’. The second chapter is going to analyze ‘presuppositions’ and its main ideas. For this purpose, the chapter is going to begin with a proper definition of this theory. It is to be pointed out what ‘presuppositions’ are, how they are used and how the many possible ‘presuppositions’ can be distinguished from one another in general by their triggers. In order to do so, this is going to be followed by an explanatory part about ‘presupposition triggers’, including which these triggers are and how they are used, as well as some examples. The third chapter is going to examine the semantic theory of ‘entailment’ and its main ideas. At first, it will be pointed out what ‘entailment’ means by using a truth-based definition by John I. Saeed. In order to explain how this semantic theory works, this paragraph will also include some examples, as well as a short excurse to ‘hyponymy’, since this is a regular source for entailment between sentences. Furthermore, the so called ‘truth table’ will be introduced in order to improve the accessibility of the theory by visualizing it. The second part is going to be the analysis of some selected passages of Isaac Marion’s novel Warm Bodies in terms of the above named aspects, in which the usage and effect of presupposition and entailment in this context will be pointed out.

Over the last several decades, employers have increasingly replaced permanent employees with temporary workers and independent contractors to cut labor costs and enhance flexibility. Although commentators have focused largely on low-wage temporary work, the use of skilled contractors has also grown exponentially, especially in high-technology areas. Yet almost nothing is known about contracting or about the people who do it. This book seeks to break the silence. Gurus, Hired Guns, and Warm Bodies tells the story of how the market for temporary professionals operates from the perspective of the contractors who do the work, the managers who employ them, the permanent employees who work beside them, and the staffing agencies who broker deals. Based on a year of field work in three staffing agencies, life histories with over seventy contractors and studies of workers in some of America's best known firms, the book dismantles the myths of temporary employment and offers instead a grounded description of how contracting works. Engagingly written, it goes beyond rhetoric to examine why contractors leave permanent employment, why managers hire them, and how staffing agencies operate. Barley and Kunda paint a richly layered portrait of contract professionals. Readers learn how contractors find jobs, how agents negotiate, and what it is like to shoulder the risks of managing one's own "employability." The authors illustrate how the reality of flexibility often differs substantially from its promise. Viewing the knowledge economy in terms of organizations and markets is not enough, Barley and Kunda conclude. Rather, occupational communities and networks of skilled experts are what grease the skids of the high-tech, "matrix economy" where firms become way stations in the flow of expertise.

Larry Zafran

Readers may be surprised to learn that this protest begins with the following statement: “If you are called for jury duty, and are reasonably able to serve, it is important that you support your fellow Americans by serving to the best of your ability and with complete honesty, even if serving is inconvenient or unpleasant.” Having said that, the premise of the protest is as follows: America’s jury duty system, much like American society in general, has degraded to the point where it is essentially defunct. The system (i.e., summoning random citizens to appear in court) is essentially the same as it has always been, yet over the course of just the last 50 years, American society and the average American citizen have completely changed. By any reasonable standard, America has become a completely new country, and its citizens have devolved into a less advanced species. The majority of people summoned for jury duty are not qualified to serve—at least not by any reasonable standard. Being the proverbial “warm body” (albeit one who is a non-felon American citizen and at least 18 years old) is not sufficient. At minimum, a juror must be able to completely understand everything that transpires in a case, and be intellectually capable of doing more than simple keyword matching. Compliance with juror summonses is low. Some are wastefully sent to people who have moved or are deceased, but the concern is that many people toss their summonses in the garbage while likely thinking, “I never got it. I never signed for it. It wasn’t sent with delivery confirmation. They can’t prove anything. Let’s see them waste their limited budget to come after me.” Even though the overwhelming majority of court cases are not handled by a jury, we can’t have a system in which criminals are set free because they were entitled to a trial by a jury of their “peers,” but no such people were available. We also can’t have a system in which people who have been falsely accused of wrongdoing are left with no other option than to plead their case to a judge. If someone mentions the phrase “jury duty” at a social gathering, many people chime in with “horror stories” (perhaps secondhand) about bad experiences, and share excuses and tactics they’ve used (or have heard were used) to get out of attending or serving on a given case. Some people are uncomfortable deciding whether to sentence a potentially innocent person to a long, harsh prison term (if not death), or awarding a large sum of money in a civil case. Others have anxiety about the logistics or financial ramifications of serving, and are concerned about losing their job, being punished by their employer, or falling behind on work. For the self-employed or unemployed, the concern may be lost wages or opportunities. The book includes sections addressing the minimum age and education level required of jurors, volunteering for service, references to religion in courthouses, jury nullification, plea bargaining with alleged criminals without juror approval, grand jury duty, mandatory jury service, the juror handbook, juror safety, the penalty for perjury, jury duty scams, a list of things the government can do to improve juror turnout, and a list of reasons why people are giving up on America’s justice system. Jury duty was, is, and hopefully always will be integral to America's system of justice. Having said that, our current system has become horribly outdated, and a great deal of change is needed. Hopefully, this book will serve as a model of how someone can express his/her viewpoints on a matter in a non-violent, non-destructive, and non-disruptive manner. The power to change laws, policies, and the collective consciousness of The People is best accomplished through the written or spoken word, and as a last resort, through non-violent, non-destructive, and non-disruptive demonstrations or acts of civil (as in “civilized”) disobedience and resistance.
